Percussion Drums FAQs

What are drum brushes?

Drumsticks and fingers are the two most common methods used to produce sound from a drum. However, brushes are also available if you want to produce a softer, stroked sound. These are frequently used by marching bands on snare drums.

Brushes are a flared bundle of thin wires. These wires, when drawn across a drum, make a softer sound than hitting the drum with a drum stick. The two brushes are moved in patterns that create differing rhythms.

What is a drum set add-on and what are some add-on options?

Drum set add-ons are simply pieces of percussion that you can add to your existing drum set to expand your set. Examples of add-ons include additional mounted toms, floor toms, a double-bass drum, as well as various cymbals. Some drummers will also choose to add such percussive instruments as cowbells. Add-ons are popular for drummers looking to customize their sound in order to create something distinctive.

What is a drum machine and what does it do?

A drum machine is a programmable unit capable of making several accurately recreating drum sounds. Drum machines are capable of recreating nearly every sound created by percussion instruments. Drum machines can generally be programmed to create loop patterns that one can practice with—but they can also be programmed to provide the drums for entire songs, or even entire sets. The drum machine is typically used to aid in practice, though some musicians do use them in live performances.
